OLDER NEWSLETTERS
Newsletter January 2010.
Happy New Year to you all.I hope I can be a little more regular with my newsletter communications. It is hard to get everything done in a timely fashion-especially when I am traveling. This is the first time in many years that I have looked forward to my year ahead with complete joy .So this is a year for me to get fit and organised and do lots of things that have been on hold. One thing I have decided is not to shop!I now order my Coles groceries on line and delivered for the princely sum of $5.I have also joined “Food Connect” which delivers me a box of locally sourced (500k radius of Brisbane) Organic fruit and vegies each week.It is a group that connects farmers with consumers directly which means the farmers get more income and can continue farming.Look them up-they are in other states as well ! I also shop a little locally at Four Seasons the wonderful Organic Shop in Samford which Murray and I used to own.So a year without shopping -sounds like heaven to me!
My schedule for this year is a busy one.I will be traveling again with the Craft and Quilt fairs all around Australia .This year I will be teaching from a studio and selling my work and materials at each fair which is a little different to being featured artist.I thoroughly enjoyed my year and look forward to meeting more of you at the fairs this year.I will post the dates I will be in each state on my blog at http://www.wendybailye.com .
The Calendar for my Samford Studio Classes is done so please mark your calendars now so you don’t miss out! I finish teaching in September so it is quite a short teaching term.
My first teaching for the year is in Melbourne in February at Beautiful Silks ( for details see www.wendybailye.com - Workshops Abroad).
I am also teaching at the ORANGE TEXTILE FORUM in April. This is a new experience for me and I was thrilled to be asked.
I had a busy time at the end of 2009 with my exhibition with Sharyn Hall- “Wild Things” will be on again this year - Nov 25th-28th details will be posted later.
The new edition of FELT MAGAZINEis in newsagents now.It comes out twice per year so don’t forget to subscribe to this very informative resource for Australian Felters.I am still assistant editor so any ideas welcome!
Helpful Hints…
- Use low suds soap like vegetable oil or olive oil soaps for felting- much better for your hands.I use lux flakes one teaspoon to a litre of water and olive oil soap for my felting .I never get sore hands and I can use a minimum of water which is a bonus.
- A simple dye for silk is made with tea.Save your old teabags and boil them up in some water.Turn to low and simmer some silk fabric for a gorgeous caramel colour.Try tie dyeing the fabric with rubber bands for a bit of fun.
- Use old pieces of felt as pre-felt .If they are hard felted brush the back with a dog brush or wire brush to get the pile up andthey should stick on nicely to a fluffy pile of new wool under them.
- Use many different colours as layers in a piece of felt and see the lovely depth of colour as a result.Put a really bright colour in the middle.
- Have a play day where you just make samples of all sorts of different techniques as prefelts then you can use them up in projects at a later date.
- Take digital photos of textures rather than things.Try and replicate the texture in your work as a challenge.
The photos are texture photos from Stradbroke Isaland and finally some photos of work I have done lately

Hope you are all ready for an inspiring creative year!
Kind Regards ,
Wendy
